Maa ki daal - no milk/cream needed

This creamy dal, is super easy and a delicious protein fix. There is absolutely no need to add extra cream or milk to this recipe. Urad dal, by itself has a great creamy texture. The key technique to use here is slow cooking. So don't make this dal in a hurry. It requires time, attention and some love. A bowl of rice, this dal and papad will give you the warm fuzzies. Enjoy!

Maa Ki Dal



Ingredients

Part 1

1/2 cup whole urad dal soaked overnight
1/4 cup rajma soaked overnight
1 tsp ginger finely chopped
1 green chilli slit
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp salt

Part 2

1 Onion finely chopped
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
1 tomato finely chopped
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp jeera powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp jeera
Ghee - I trust your judgement here. 

Let's get started

Step 0 - Soak the whole urad dal and rajma over night

Step 1 - Take all the ingredients in Part 1 place it in a pressure cooker and give it a 8-10 whistles.

Step 2 - In a deep pan add generous tbsp of ghee. Once hot add jeera and let it dance around a bit.

Step 3 - Add the ginger and garlic paste and fry till brown. Next add the onion and fry it till brown.

Step 4 - Add chilli powder, jeera powder, coriander powder, salt and tomatoes. Cook on a low flame for a good 10 mins. Stir occasionally.

Step 5 - Add the cooked dal into the karahi. Mix, check for salt and let it simmer for another 10 mins.

Step 6 - Add another dollop of ghee, chopped coriander, serve with rice and chapati and relish.
